Mutagenius

The 2022 winter update only gave us 3 achievements. It may seem like few, but the complexity of one of them is truly surprising and will make many achievement hunters reach the limit of their patience. Its name is: Mutagenius. This post will aim to explain how to obtain this achievement and some tactics learned during testing that can make it easier to solve.

Firstly, this achievement can be obtained during task 2 of the Cradle of Monsters Quest. This task consists of using levers to change the colors of creatures called Mutagens within a rectangle, there are 9 levers: 5 that are to the south and shoot in a vertical line and another 4 that are to the west and shoot in a horizontal line).

If any creature is in the path of the "wave" produced by pulling the lever, it will change color. Below we have created an image with the color cycle.

Starting for example with a green color your progression would be:

Green => Red => Black => Yellow => Blue => Violet => Green (again)

To complete this task with the objective of unlocking the access, simply leave 11 mutagens of the same color and pull the lever to the north (we will show it in a green focus in an image below). For those who want the achievement, the challenge becomes more difficult, for them the mission will be to leave all the mutagens in the same color (all 16 in the room) and at the end pull the same lever already mentioned.

As the rectangular space containing the mutagens has measurements of 5 square meters x 4 square meters, the total space is 20 floors, there are 16 mutagens, so 4 spaces will always be empty.

The biggest problem is a characteristic of the movement of these mutagens: they are very slow. At many times it is possible that they appear to be starting their movement, but for the purposes of the mechanics you should already consider them on the destination floor, below is an example image.

Taking special care with this floor change will help a lot in solving it, but obviously just knowing this is not enough. We have also written some tips on how to solve this mechanic with a focus on the achievement, but we have already made it very clear that it is not enough to know everything, there is also a luck factor involved in this task.

List of proposed actions to resolve the achievement:

Choose a color and look at the list/image of the color cycle to know which color is exactly after the one you chose. It is also useful to know which color is before the one you chose. We will use the first image of this post as an example, in this case we will choose the color red. The color immediately after it in the list is the color black. The color before it is green.

Note from step 1 (it will serve as a rule until the end): Considering the choice of a color, and as an example it is red, you cannot hit the wave in the red mutagen since that would convert it into another one. You should avoid (but not necessarily) hitting the wave in the green mutagen, as that would cause more of the red ones to appear and this will make it even more difficult to fulfill the duty of not hitting them in the waves.

With the color scheme and their progression in mind, the first objective is to eliminate the colors after the chosen one, in this example the step will consist of transforming the 2 black mutagens into yellow ones.

At this point the color immediately after the chosen color (in the example, black) no longer exists, only the color after it remains (in the example, yellow). As far as possible, eliminate them, converting them to blue .

Following the example, the yellow color no longer exists, the focus will be on eliminating the blue colors, from this point on there is no longer a need to take such great care in getting the green color right (and converting it to red ), but you must continue to be very careful not to get the red colors right.

After the previous step, what is expected for this example is that there will be no more blue Mutagens, the focus from this moment on becomes its subsequent color: Violet Mutagens.

At this point, as per the example, there will only be 2 colors, with the green Mutagens being the focus so that it is possible to convert them all into red. Depending on the arrangement of these creatures in other steps, at this step there may be different amounts of Mutagens of the color previous to the one chosen (in the example it is green). We will divide this part into 2 moments: the first will be to try to leave 3-4 Mutagens of the previous color ( green in the example), try not to leave 2 or just 1, as this will greatly reduce the probability of being able to finish.

The second moment will depend a lot on luck, you must wait for the best moment when only Mutagens of the previous color are aligned. This moment will not always come and it is often possible that the room time, which is 10 minutes, will run out.

The images shown in this tip may not convey the real difficulty of this task, as the Mutagens are constantly moving, as well as blocking movement between them.

Some important information:

If any Mutagen of the chosen color is accidentally hit, and especially in the last steps, it becomes more advantageous to convert all of them to the subsequent color (In the example, it would be easier to convert all red Mutagens to black Mutagens ).

Additionally, as already mentioned in one of the suggested steps for resolution, the room time is 10 minutes. The sooner you can get to the step where there are 12-13 Mutagens of the chosen color and 3-4 of the color before the chosen one, the more time you will have to try your luck and wait for the remaining 3-4 Mutagens to line up.

In the final step, when the last action is to wait for the remaining 3-4 Mutagens to line up, avoid using the levers on the left (which correspond to rows) and focus on the ones on the south (which correspond to columns), since a column has 4 floors and a row has 5, it becomes easier to have a column without Mutagens of the chosen color than a row.

Finally, this task has a 4-hour cooldown, and if successful, the achievement is received not only by the person who pulls the lever, but by everyone in the room.
